Needless delays put pubs' futures at risk

The NRS team was most concerned to read an article on about pubs in England and Wales continuing to be caught up in the business rates appeal backlog.

It appears 5,231 licensees are currently awaiting the outcome of their rate appeals while a further 214 are still waiting to hear on appeals stretching back to 2005, according to business rates firm CVS.

Also, what happens to any overpayments if a business has failed? Is the appeal carried on to a new tenant or, in the case of the pub companies, are they advised suitably to continue a case?

If most appeals result in no change then, firstly, there is no excuse for the backlog. Secondly, an overview of the rating process is desperately required as it is extremely rare for turnover to rise for lessees during the dates mentioned in the report.

With ever-rising costs and less margins to generate profit; the same argument applies - why are rates remaining unchanged?

NRS has been a licensed trade accountant for over a decade and our founder and senior partner Neil Sysum is also the vice-chairman and treasurer of the Association of Licensed Trade Accountants (ALTA).
